ATSIHAW NEWSLETTER February 2018

PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS (PrEP) –  A TABLET YOU TAKE TO PREVENT HIV

On 9 February, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) announced PrEP will be subsidised by the Australian Government through the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS). This means that soon HIV-negative people at risk of HIV will be able to get prescriptions from the doctor for PrEP under the PBS. Taking PrEP daily will prevent HIV if you’re HIV-negative.

Population groups most likely to benefit from PrEP are sexually active gay and bisexual men, transgender people and heterosexual people with an HIV-positive partner who does not have an undetectable viral load.
